California Energy Commission awards natural gas engine research project

posted Jun 19, 2013, 3:16 PM by Samveg Saxena   [ updated Jun 19, 2013, 3:19 PM ]
A recent research proposal, for which Dr. Saxena contributed technical content, to the California Energy Commission was selected to be funded. The project will develop spark-ignited natural gas engines for heavy duty vehicle applications. The project will focus on improving two aspects of natural gas SI engines:
  1. Improving part load efficiency using dynamic skip fire technology (i.e. cylinder deactivation).
  2. Improving the maximum power capabilities through engine boosting and extending the knocking limits.
The proposal, which is led by UC Berkeley, involves industrial partners Westport Innovations and Tula Technologies.
